Seattle Soundings – Hoh Rainforest

Located in Olympic National Park on the opposite side of the Olympics from Seattle, the Hoh Rainforest is one of the wettest places in the United States. Just my luck to show up on a bright and sunny day…. Getting there is a good part of the fun – as with the Olympic beaches, there isn’t really a quick way to reach it from Seattle, and the roads there have enough scenery around them to keep the drive interesting. Once at the turnoff from Highway 101 the final portion of the drive along a narrow and sometimes winding 2 lane road seems much longer than it actually is, but it is a fair bit off the highway so don’t expect a quick in and out.

The visitor center lies at the end of the road, and while the drive in does give some impression of what’s inside, a few minutes spent on one of the trails really opens up access into this surprising world of moss and water.
