A Farewell to Quince

Today marked the end of my attempt to grow quince.  The first tree turned brown and died in 2014 but the second only had a few brown leaves and otherwise looked healthy.  Last year it had a few browned branches, but keeping on top of the pruning managed to give it what looked like a chance to survive.  This year proved that that was only a temporary reprieve, and there were only a few green leaves at most.  All other trees have had a relatively disease free year.   Today I was out with the burn pile and had the saw out with me, and the message of the quince tree was too clear to ignore – it wasn’t suited to growing here. In a matter of minutes the sad remains and the last few green shoots were down and shortly after were being purified by fire.
